Artist's Comments

050308-pencil

In "Der Zauberberg", of Thomas Mann, Settembrini says that the music has to be preceded by literature to have an effect. I would claim, by extension, that all kind of art should go together with literature. I cannot consider them separately.
Lately I'm reflecting about the linguistic theory of Roy Harris, who, roughly condensing, belives in communication, rather than in language, which is, in his view, non existent: every utterance is new and unique. He holds that you cannot say the same thing twice, exactly as you cannot draw the same line twice (as I tried to do in the picture), because there is not a fixed code.
It abruptely came to my mind the idea that the minimal unit of language is the word, wich can be compared to the minimal unit of visual art, the line. Well, I'm perfectly conscious that both ideas can be questionables, but this kind of correspondence fascinates me, and is making me think about the relationship between art (visual music included) and literature, as well as the link between linguistic theories and philosophy. I haven't a complete outlook of the whole matter yet, of course, but I'm just tryng to put some ideas together.
The picture is the first attempt to condense these thoughts in a concrete artpiece. I mean, I don't want you to like it, I just want you to consider it as a work, and not as an explanatory draft.

i have always been taught that literature is one of the seven arts (with painting, sculpture, drama, music, probably poetry and another i don't recall now in the same way that when you want to name them, one of the seven dwarfs will always be missing). Anyway i like to see art as a big body with many expressions...

I just thought - if the word is the minimal unit of language, what about the letter? the sign? isn't it interesting that both for music and language some sort of sign (also if it may never be repeated exactly) is needed to explain it?

comunque è vero che la tua submission "suona", i can hear it as i look at it.

"listen with your eyes, listen with your eyes, and hear everything you see...i can hear the rainbow, hear the rainbow..." la conosci? è una canzone per bambini
:iconadani:
non la conosco, but I think it to be very nice. anyway, you say exactly what I mean. we can consider then the letter, the sign, as the point. many letters: a word. many points: a line. ma sono loro le unità minime di significato? non so.

comunque se trovo quella canzone - non so come si chiami,la cantavamo in kindergarten, the moment of my life when i also began to see that there were different ways, languages,to express oneself - te la mando...
